Begin Scripting

Now the documentation phase of the physical process begins. As part of the Physical Theatre process you will be required to document the performance you are creating. What I would like you to do is document on the blog the opening scene as it was created on Thursday. Comment on your specific role in this piece, the shape, architecture and spatial relationships used. Also address what the mood and theme of the piece is as it relates to The Trial and Josef K.

How does what Drew choreographed on Thursday tell the audience about what is to come in the story of K?

Can we as a group do any more to develop the theme, story at this point?

  1. hi dobby
well i think thursdays lesson with drew really helped everyone as a group to get back on track with what we have to do so thanks to you and mrs moore carter for bringing him back in.

well in the opening sequence annie, maddy, isabel and myself are the weird hand people. so we like are behind the white curtain at the back of the cultural precinct. we start by "creeping" our hands underneath the curtain and then slowly emerge into the space where everyone is. the four of us are on the floor and separated from everyone else.

confusion would be the word that i would describe the mood and theme of this piece because alot of things are happening all at the same time so the audience is not focused on just one person or group of people.

drew's choreography creates a sense of suspense for the audience escpecially seeing as drew has made timing a major tool within this piece. the audeinece may feel that anything could happen from here.

as a group maybe we could incorporate voice and sound and incorporate ideas that were said last term.

cant wait for tuesdays lesson and hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!
    xo

In the opening scene myself and eliza were facing the wall standing next to each other with our wrists crossed behind our backs. From there we were to act as if our wrists were tied together, our aim was to try to get loss, to show our struggle. From this point the centre group would make three specific noises that pull us( myself, eliza, gam, grace and lucy) towards the centre into a certain point where three people from the centre came to us which at this point we are lifted. i think the theme and mood created was confusion, stuggle. I think of this mostly due to the character i was introduced to and how i felt as the scene progressed.

I think the character given to me and the people who had this same character could represent K. I think they may feel as though K is taken away but what will happen to him next would not be somthing that could be determined. all the things that happen at the same time creates the effect of dont try to understand the story, flow with it so it can fall together and be understanded in its own time.

Maybe we could consider to add sharp words to help create the theme. This could be said by each person at different times to create the "confusion" or at the same time to start the narration. I think we should end the openning scene with the starting of the narration... somehow i think it could work

    see you on thursday =D
i hope this blog comment was wat you expected

  3. The year 11 drama class were very fortunate to be able to work on and choreograph the opening act with someone as experienced and talented as Drew. I think that his ideas and choreography is a great starting point for our performance. Now that we’ve got some great ideas and a creative opening, we have set a high standard we must try our best to live up to whilst choreographing for our end performance.

My role in this particular scene is one of the “spiders”. The “spiders” make efficient use of the architecture by emerging from the main back curtain. Isabella, Maddy, Isabel and I begin hidden behind the back curtain and slowly come out from underneath shaping our hands to represent crawling spiders. Drew told us that we must use our hands to make it look as though the spiders are pulling our bodies forward. After the four of us are fully exposed to the audience we are to slowly and simultaneously move forward to the centre of the stage where we then turn into creepy, monster/creature-like beings.

Because there is such a big number of performers in this scene most of the sections to the opening scene has been devised so that we are all a part of a small group. Our spatial relationship begins spread out around the room (making efficient use of space) and therefore separated from the other groups. However, we all emerge into the middle of the stage to form a much closer, big group.

It’s really hard to think of one overall mood for this piece as we are still becoming familiar with the choreography. However, if I were to watch this I would feel a sense of confusion and edginess due to the creepy, weird spiders and monsters. I guess this is the mood we want to portray as this is how I think K would feel in The Trial. Drew’s choreography would leave the audience feeling not only confused but curious as to what the story is about. Therefore the audience would be eager to watch on. Maybe use of sound and dialogue will help the audience understand what is going on.

It would be helpful if the group came together and brainstormed as a class for ideas throughout the performance as I feel some class members are still a little bit confused about the representation of mood and K as a person.

Can't wait to choreograph more of the performance! :)

  4. Good evening Tanya Dobson!

It's amazing how much work can be accomplished with Drew in the room! As everyone knew it would be our last lesson with him, inspiration, energy and creativeness was coming from all directions; architecture especially was used to its full potential; the separated groups created some really moving and amazing scenes. For example, the box in the centre of the room opening up to reveal a distressed K (perhaps signifying a confused K 'asking' his dominant supervisors what his 'crime' is) was nerve-tingling, the absolutely breathtaking composition behind the white curtain was so diverse, and the use of the absent stairs and Isabella's flexibility was clever.

The opening scene, I am positive, will capture the audiences possibly wary attention immediately.

My own role in the opening scene is that of the person (who is presented by the majority of the class) who makes false allegations against K. Beginning alongside Maddison, Isabella and Annabelle behind the curtain at the back of the space, we emerge in half-unison into the open area by creeping our hands under the black drape, and allowing the rest of our bodies to follow. The purpose of entering the scene in such a bizarre manner is to symbolise: "the man (K) had never seen in the house (come) in."

Crawling and creeping along the floor, all four of us then stand and raise our arms straight above our heads with palms opened to the audience, signifying the fact that we are not permitted to answer K's questions as to why he is being arrested. We then crawl towards/with our fellow 'self' at the diverse boxes in the centre of the space. Edging so close to audience in such a weird and sinister manner will really creep out the people unfamiliar with physical theatre, therefore achieving our group-awareness of forming the mean character of the accusing.

By this point the majority of the space has been utilised, and the architecture of the curtain and boxes been used effectively.

During the dramatic movement of the people on and below the boxes, I am amongst the few who uncannily get their bodies into a weird position and 'stare down' the audience. I am sure by this point it will be clear that we are not a good person. Following this is four sudden movements of all the people on and around the boxes reaching toward the 'front' with our best Caliban-inspired facial expression. The shape of these movements is huddled to imply we are one person, and when we extend, it is as though we are searching for our victim.

"K entered more slowly than he expected."
This phrase is placed into action by the four or five K's wandering into the space at the forefront of the accusing man (group). Once the K's are in the position of a straight line, the authorities surround the K in a sudden movement and hoist them above their heads, indicating that K is the accused. Some people may interpret this lift as K having 'his head in the clouds' and not understanding why he is being put through this.

The overall mood of the opening scene is full of confusion as so many things are occurring at once; with the background music it is absolute mayhem. When K enters, it has been made clear that he should not be 'in the hands' of the person, and would not want to be either.

Drew's composition has informed the audience that a long trial is yet to occur as K struggles against the dominant authorities - suspense has been developed already.

I think by joining on some of the ideas we came up with in the compositions mentioned at the beginning of this hideously long answer will move the story forwards - perhaps we can move the audience through that hallway of music rooms that is conjoined with cultural precint (and in there use the curtain idea Eliza's group came up with), move into Pam Sextons room and from there down into the undercroft.

I look forward to reading about everyone else's interpretations and composing some more masterpieces tomorrow! Loving the blog!

  6. On thursday we started to create our opening scene for our physical theatre,
its looking good thus far, but i know we can make it even better.
Drew is amazing, we got so much work done thanks to him!
I like how everyone is represented as "one" so there are not really any mains as such, this helps to incorpurate everyone, leaving noone out. i very much like this idea, becuase it helps us to expland our minds and help to respresent one person.
the "spiders" are so good in making that creepy feeling as well as the "dragon noise" that brings the people who are tied up on the wall who represent K, that the man has control over you and you cant do anything to stop it as you dont know how and why they have done this.
i really enjoy my part as one of the people on the wall who get picked up, :) i like this how it makes me feel sorta of like a cheerleader, heklping making the final dance.
